John Lewis has a long reputation for offering good value for the quality and their sale dates are well worth keeping an eye out for.

Not only do we provide the next John Lewis sale dates we also provide information on how to double-check you are getting a good deal as well as a little known way to get yourself some rare cashback (at a good rate) on your John Lewis sale purchases, plus other savings tips.

John Lewis Sale

Ever since I can remember John Lewis sales events have been massively popular.  The store is generally well-known for selling quality items at competitive prices.

Although, it’s not gone unnoticed that in recent years the retail stores have struggled a little with online competition and this has unfortunately resulted in some store closures, 8 in 2020 and another 8 in 2021.

However, John Lewis seems to be adjusting and instead of avoiding some of the more recent sales phenomenons is actively participating in them as much as anyone else.  Which is great all-around for price matching competitors!

When Does the John Lewis Sale Start?

The next John Lewis sale will start on Black Friday, 26 November 2021.

This will be quickly followed up with a sale on Cyber Monday 29th November 2021.

Be sure to check out our tips below to save even more on your sale prices.  You might be surprised at how much extra you can actually save.

Past John Lewis Sale Dates

Past sales dates can be used as a guide to future sales.

In 2020 there were 3 main sales:

  •  Sunday 14th June 2020 (Summer Sale)
  • Friday 20th November 2020 (Black Friday Sale)
  • Wednesday 23rd December 2020 (Boxing Day Sales)

You can also typically expect the following annual sale events:

  • Easter Sales – Good Friday and Easter Monday 2022
  • Spring Bank Holiday Sales – first week of May 2022
  • Summer Sale – end of June to early July
  • Summer Bank Holiday Sales – end of August 2022

John Lewis constantly has regular and smaller department-specific sales.  These are more random and less easy to predict but we will add forthcoming sales to the page when we spot them.

John Lewis Black Friday Sales

John Lewis maintains its price match policy even during major sales events that all its main competitors also take part in like Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

It’s a great time to keep an eye on all prices across competitors too.

Typically John Lewis will discount 100’s of products in the Black Friday sale.  Many up to 50% off.

This is a far cry from a couple of years ago when John Lewis refused to take part in the Black Friday sales.

John Lewis Boxing Day Sale

The John Lewis Boxing Day sale actually starts before the 26th of December.  For example, in 2020 it started on the 23rd of December.

The sale typically goes on for about a month, although obviously, the most sought after-sale items will go first, so if you are after anything in particular it’s best to go early.

John Lewis Price Match

One of the reasons for John Lewis ongoing popularity is its Price Match promise where they are promise to never knowingly be undersold by high street competitors.

Never Knowingly Undersold

The key aspect of meeting the price match terms is that you must be comparing it to exactly the same type of item.  Same colour, model number, length of guarantee etc.

You have 28 days to claim a price match and some money back if you qualify.  You can read more about how the price match works when put to the test by Andy, here.

You can read the finer terms of the never knowingly undersold policy here.

Best Month of Year for John Lewis Sales

It’s also worth noting that while it’s certainly a good time to shop in the sales, it’s almost because its expected.

In fact, according to Which? magazines research, October was the month with the most items on sale, by quite some way too.  December was the month with the least.  You can see the Which? results here. Something worth bearing in mind.

Tips to Save More on a John Lewis Sale

The first tip to save money in John Lewis sale, whether it’s Black Friday or any other is to ask yourself, “Do I really need it?”.

Do I really need it?

Ideally, plan your purchases in advance and if they aren’t reduced enough, don’t buy them.

Also, be fully aware of impulse buying other online sale items you might not need.

Price Check

Assuming you do want the items it’s also good to check if you are actually getting a good price.

We can do this by checking out the price history of some items to see if we are getting as good a deal as it seems.

For example, you can type items into Price Runner or try PriceSpy, and it will show you a list of retailers sale prices for the item.

You can also type products into Google Shopping for price comparisons.

Competitor Check

Assuming you are getting a good deal it’s also worth checking if you can get the item cheaper elsewhere.

If you are, make sure you are comparing like for like.   Sometimes the prices might be similar but the John Lewis warranty might be longer or the colour slightly different in some way.  If it is even slightly different, they won’t price match.

Personally, I never pay extra for even longer warranties.  Instead, I put some money aside each month like my own insurance and put it towards whatever does go working or break.   Over the years this has saved me a small fortune compared to if I’d have taken out the extended warranties on every item.

Codes And Discounts

Sometimes there are discount codes available for My John Lewis members.

If you download the John Lewis app, as a My John Lewis member you’ll get notifications and access to future product launches, sales and competitions.

It’s also a handy place for saving your in-store receipts.

Student Discount

Unfortunately, John Lewis doesn’t offer any student discounts believing they already offer competitive enough pricing to everyone as it is.

How to Get Cashback From John Lewis

Once you’ve decided to make your bargain purchase in the John Lewis sale it’s always good to save a little extra in the form of a discount code or cashback.

I’ve literally saved £100’s over the years simply by going to shop at John Lewis via a free cashback site first.   If you don’t already get cashback on nearly every online purchase you are missing out.

Check out my Topcashback review to see how it works.

2% to 5% cashback on John Lewis Purchases

However, it’s very rare, if at all these days I see cashback available for John Lewis and if it was it would be a very low percentage.  Although at the time of writing Topcashback were offering 3% in Avios points on all purchases so always worth checking.

This is why I was extra pleased to discover Zilch.

Zilch is a buy now pay later app with a digital MasterCard that has no interest charges and charges no hidden late fees.

Sign up to Zilch here or first look at how I claimed an instant Zilch free £10 Amazon voucher without spending any of my own money.

Although the buy it now aspect is not something I would personally recommend because it encourages people to spend money they don’t currently have, it does have another option.

If you use the Zilch card to Pay it all now, you can earn 5% cashback.

You earn the rewards and there’s no debt involved.  The payment will come straight out of your bank account via your debit card.

(This was previously 2% and it may revert back to that at some point, but even 2% is a good cashback rate for John Lewis)

If you are interested in this kind of discount you can read more about how Zilch works and if its for you.

John Lewis Partnership Card

John Lewis has their own credit card you can apply for and currently earn 1.25% in points on purchases you make in John Lewis and Waitrose stores which you can put towards exchanging for John Lewis vouchers.

This is only a benefit if you pay the credit card off in full every month and never incur the high-interest rate charges that credit cards apply.
